Healthcare for the Homeless
Striving to meet the medical needs of everyone in our community, GLFHC offers the only federally-funded Healthcare for the Homeless Program in the Merrimack Valley.
GLFHC’s Healthcare for the Homeless program serves more than 1,100 patients at community-based sites across the Merrimack Valley. Our medical team provides primary healthcare directly to this patient population at shelters, drop in centers, and soup kitchens for health issues ranging from diabetes to depression and exposure to the elements. In addition to providing primary healthcare, staff also assist in securing medications, health insurance, and directing our homeless patients towards local resources for food, emergency shelter, permanent housing and job training.
GLFHC provides healthcare to the homeless at community-based sites on a regularly scheduled basis, including:
- Daybreak Shelter – 19 Winter St., Lawrence
- Bread and Roses Soup Kitchen – 58 Newbury St., Lawrence
- Common Ground – 194 Winter St., Haverhill
- Days-In Hotel – 159 Pelham St., Methuen
- The Movement Family (TMF) – 295 Common St., Lawrence
- House of Mercy – 85 Baystate Rd., Lawrence
Mobile Health Program
The health center’s Mobile Health Program (MHP) treats homeless patients in the communities in which they live, delivering primary care and other specialized care to them that they might not otherwise be able to receive on a mobile clinic.
Services we provide as part of the MHP include:
- Primary Health Care
- Urgent Care
- General Health Screenings
- Family Planning
- Wound Care
- Immunizations
- Referrals to Resources
A generous grant from the Yawkey Foundation was combined with additional donations to help GLFHC purchase a second Mobile Health Clinic. The transformative $100,000 gift has enabled the health center to expand services.
A lead donation from the Arbella Insurance Foundation enabled GLFHC to purchase a second Mobile Health Clinic. The $150,000 contribution toward the purchase of a fully-customized, two-exam room vehicle allowed the health center to expand its Mobile Health Program.
GLFHC’s Mobile Health Program (MHP) receives generous funding annually through a sustaining grant from Cummings Foundation. The grant awards the MHP $50,000 a year over a 10-year period, which has enabled the Health Center to continue to provide care to our most vulnerable patient population throughout Lawrence, Methuen, and Haverhill.
