About the Fellowship
This is in an exciting transition period as a new ACGME-accredited Addiction Medicine Fellowship, which will provide strong training and allow participants to sit for the Addition Medicine Board Exam.
Currently a standalone fellowship, the goal is to integrate this fellowship into Lawrence FMR’s Four-Year Length of Training residency model within the next two years, which would allow residents to achieve the same board-eligible training while also completing full-spectrum family medicine training. This would follow the same model as Lawrence FMR’s current four-year model, where Areas of Concentration are completed during PGY3 and PGY4 year.
By completion of fellowship, fellows will be able to:
- Independently evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients with substance use and addictive disorders across diverse clinical settings. These settings will include but are not limited to inpatient, outpatient clinic, mobile or shelter sites, residential treatment, methadone clinic.
- Provide longitudinal, integrated pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment for addiction within primary care and community-based systems.
- Deliver addiction care that is trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and stigma-reducing.
- Coordinate care effectively with interprofessional teams and community partners.
- Apply systems-based approaches to improve quality, safety, access, and equity in addiction care.
- Use evidence-based practice, reflective learning, and ethical principles to guide addiction-related clinical decision-making.

Faculty
Core Faculty
Mia Sorcinelli, MD, FAAFP, FASAM
Addiction Fellowship Program Director
Curricular Focus: Addiction Medicine
Undergraduate: Bowdoin College
Medical School: University Of Massachusetts Chan Medical School
Residency: Lawrence Family Medicine Residency Program
Leadership Positions: Office Based Addition Treatment (OBAT) Program Director, North Site Medical Director, Latent Tuberculosis Treatment Team MD Lead
Hometown: Amherst, MA
Mia's desire to be a Family Doctor started at a young age with a fascinating first aid textbook that was a gift from a favorite uncle. During Medical School, Mia developed an interest in underserved and Spanish-speaking populations after an elective block doing a community construction project in the rural Dominican Republic. Residency at Lawrence was a strong values match for Mia and she found a new clinical niche after completing the Buprenorphine training curriculum and working with some memorable patients. After graduating from residency, Mia welcomed her first child and returned from maternity leave to outpatient clinic seeing a full range of Family medicine patients. Mia took over leadership of the OBAT program and has expanded it to meet the needs of the Lawrence community. During the COVID pandemic she returned to hospital rounding and enjoyed working with residents and patients during a very demanding time. Mia's clinical home is at the North site, where she is the Medical Site Director and still sees patients 5 sessions a week. She finds great joy in teaching residents and colleagues about the magic of Addiction Treatment. She also works one day a week at a local Methadone clinic, and does phone consultations for a state hotline to assist PCPs in caring for patients who have pain and addiction issues. She speaks pretty decent Spanish and would love to learn a little Haitian Creole. In her spare time, she loves running, knitting, hiking and being a Cub Scout Den Leader. She lives nearby with her husband, 3 kids and a crazy mutt of a dog.
Ryan J Dono, MD
Fellowship Associate Program Director
Medical Director of Health Care for the Homeless Program

Undergraduate: Boston College
Medical School: University of Massachusetts
Residency: Lawrence Family Medicine Residency
Academic Appointments: Clinical Assistant Professor, Family Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine
Hometown: Dudley, MA
Ryan grew up in Central Massachusetts and had the great fortune to train in residency through our program. After graduation, he spent 3 years working as Community Faculty before moving over to join the Core Faculty. He enjoys a diverse practice involving routine primary care, clinic and group visits for Addiction Medicine, precepting prenatal groups, directing our Health Care for the Homeless program, working on Labor and Delivery, providing care on the Mobile Unit and Street Medicine rounds, and enjoying his responsibilities as a PCMH Team Leader. He was attracted to the Lawrence program for its mission to serve an underserved, immigrant community and its mission to develop full spectrum Family Medicine physicians. The integration of the health center’s mission within the community of Lawrence makes his daily work incredibly rewarding. His passions in life outside of medicine involve spending time in the outdoors (hiking, fly fishing, and camping), playing soccer (Go Liverpool!), traveling, and enjoying life with his amazing wife and three children.

He grew up in a single-parent home in Haverhill, Massachusetts, another mill city up the road from Lawrence, studied evolutionary biology at Harvard, earned his MD/MPH from Tufts, and returned to the Merrimack Valley to complete his residency at LFMR where clinicians recognized the importance of social justice and advocacy in the care of the most vulnerable patients. He is fellowship core faculty and co-director of the HIV AOC for Lawrence FMR and particularly enjoys supervising residents and fellows in the clinic’s HIV, Viral Hepatitis, and OBAT. He also works at HealthQ and the Joan G. Camila Chile
Hometown: Rockville, MD
Undergraduate: Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Medical School: Tufts University School of Medicine
Residency: Lawrence Family Medicine Residency
Language: Spanish
Camila was born and raised in Rockville, MD as the youngest of four children of Peruvian immigrants. She became passionate about biology during high school when she participated in a summer internship at the National Institute of Health. She was selected as a Gates Millennium Scholar in her senior year of high school, a four-year scholarship that allowed her to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As an undergraduate, she split her time between her studies, research on glioblastoma multiforme at the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research and her role as an Admissions Ambassador in the MIT Admissions Office. It was her experience in the Admission Office that set her on her path of working with and advocating for underserved communities. She saw a career as a doctor would allow her to combine her love of biology and advocacy. She attended Tufts University School of Medicine where she was selected to participate in the Sam W. Ho Health Justice Scholars Program, a four-year curriculum focused on training medical students to act as leaders and provide high-quality care to underserved communities. She also volunteered for Entre Mujeres, a group of Tufts medical students who provided workshops and seminars on health and wellness in Spanish to Latina women in the Dorchester community. She had several experiences in the Lawrence community prior to applying for residency and she was taken by their commitment to producing full-spectrum family physicians focused on social justice and health equity. In her free time, Camila enjoys baking, cooking, watching Marvel movies and soccer with her family. Her favorite condiment is aji rocoto, a traditional Peruvian red pepper paste that has a similar spice level to habaneros.
