The “Unsung Hero” designation is awarded to employees who consistently go above and beyond because they have a passion for their work at GLFHC and the community they serve. Employees are nominated by their manager and winners are selected by the senior management team. Unsung Heroes receive a surprise visit by management and are presented with GLFHC swag and an Unsung Hero Certificate.

Melvin Caban, Mobile Health Center Driver and Community Health Worker, works tirelessly to ensure our homeless population is properly cared for on the Mobile Health Center. He is professional, respectful, flexible and always very accommodating. He takes pride in the Mobile Health Center by ensuring it is clean, safe and appropriate for patient care. Melvin does all of this quietly and independently and that is why he is our Unsung Hero!

Karin Sylvester, Human Resources Manager, has also been honored with the Unsung Hero Award. Not only is Karin’s work product exceptional, she consistently provides outstanding customer service to employees across GLFHC, effortlessly gaining the respect of all who interact with her. Karin’s reputation for high quality work is one that others have come to rely on. Karin takes the time to understand the issue, research the answer and provide sound advice on a solution. Although Karin has an extremely high volume of work, she helps anyone who needs it and takes the time to patiently explain how things are done. Karin is in early, will often work late, never complains and is always smiling. Everyone loves working with Karin! Being in HR, the hard work and extra effort put forth is sometimes thankless and seldom recognized which is why Karin is a true Unsung Hero!
