Five Ways to Get Active & Reduce Colorectal Cancer Risk

March 31, 2019

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, physical activity can reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. Whether you’re someone who struggles to moving, or someone who loves getting outdoors for some exercise, getting active with family members often makes the process easier and more fun. The recommended time is 30 to 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day to reduce colorectal cancer risk, so here are five activities you can do with your family that will help you meet those guidelines.

Hiking: Hiking can be a relaxing activity, and its slower pace makes it the perfect activity to catch up with family members. Pick a trail that includes a few uphill climbs if you want to increase the challenge.

Jumping Rope: This activity can be done at home, and it’s a perfect way to fit some good exercise into you daily schedule. Making it a family activity is as simple as seeing who can go the longest without stopping. Did you know that the most active jump ropers burn nearly 500 calories in a half hour?

Yoga: Yoga is the perfect way to de-stress after a long day of work, helping you practice your breathing while building your flexibility. Get the whole family involved by signing up for a class together.

Water Aerobics: Summer’s coming up, and doing water aerobics on a warm and sunny day is a perfect way to spend a day with the family – helping you maintain a healthy lifestyle to prevent the risk of colorectal cancer.

Walking: Exercise doesn’t need to be fancy! Taking a brisk walk around the neighborhood with your family is enough to get your physical activity in for the day. If your family enjoys shopping, consider taking a few laps around the mall.
