Keep Your Ticker in Tip-Top Shape with These 5 Heart-Healthy Exercises

March 20, 2019

Aerobic exercise is a great way to maintain low blood pressure and keep a steady heart rate. Ideally, at least 30 minutes of cardio a day is great for maintaing a healthy heart.

Here are a few cardio exercises of varying levels of intensity that will help you keep your heart in good shape:

1) Walking
Walking is enjoyable, light exercise that can clear your mind and get your heart going. Taking a 30-minute walk every day can get you off to the right start in developing a healthy lifestyle.

2) Climbing stairs
Wintertime can be hard, with very little motivation to go out outside in the cold. Climbing stairs is something that can be done without leaving the house – whether you’ve got a stair-climbing exercise machine or just a good old fashioned set of stairs – and will help with increasing your heart rate.

3) Riding a bike
On a warm, sunny day when you are sick of being trapped in the house, take a bike ride! It’s a great workout for your leg muscles and your heart. If you have trouble holding yourself accountable, get a regular bike-riding buddy.

4) Light jogging
Light jogging is very beneficial for the heart. After going on walks throughout the week, it can be helpful to switch things up. Increasing your speed by taking a light jog and get even more cardio into your routine.

5) Yoga
Whether done at home or at a gym with an instructor, yoga can relax and calm you down – but it is also a very good workout! In addition to increasing your flexibility and strength, yoga has been shown in multiple studies to benefit heart health.

These five exercises can help with maintaining a healthy lifestyle and lower your risk of heart conditions. If you don’t currently get up and move as much as you’d like to, exercising three to five times a week will help you take small steps toward a healthier heart.
